Every year, the GKSU community comes together to celebrate the achievements of the fantastic Medway students. Here are the amazing 2020 winners. Look out for the nomination period for 2021!
Welcome Helper of the Year - Sava Tuna Tuncher
Right from the start of the academic year, Sava has consistently been there to help out his fellow students, as a Welcome Helper assisting students moving into their accommodation and staying late into the evening to help make Welcome events fun and inclusive.
Rep of the Year - Jasmine Lee
As a Student Rep for Kent Business School, Jasmine has put immense time and effort into being the voice of the students on her course and succeeded in getting over 40 student signatures on a letter to the Head of KBS to fix a major issue with coursework marking.
Event of the Year - TEDx "Ctr Alt Del"
TEDx University of Kent Medway brought something new and exciting to Medway. The committee worked hard throughout the year to raise almost £4,000 in order to host this not-for-profit event bringing together students, staff, and organisations outside the university.
Fundraiser of the Year - Medway Islamic Society
After relaunching the society this year, Medway Islamic Society hosted an impressive week of volunteer activities including selling Krispy Kreme doughnuts, bucket collections, Brothers’ FIFA Tournament, Sisters’ Henna & Pamper Night, Challenge Night, a Debate Day, and their Auction Dinner. In all, £1440.86 was raised with all proceeds going to Islamic Relief.
Outstanding Individual Contribution to Volunteering - Aiqing Lu
Aiqing has passionately created arts and crafts events and activities time and again in support of the Medway community, Eco Team, and helping raise awareness about mental health and mindfulness for students on campus.
Volunteer of the Year - Nathan Arnold
Nathan has been critical in both the EngSoc and PoolSoc, establishing strong committees in both, as well as introducing the Engineering networking events, mentoring sessions and improving connections between industry and the University, all on behalf of students.
Best New Society - Medway Business Society
Medway Business Society was resurrected this year and the committee have really taken the initiative to make sure the society succeeds, running one of the most well-received socials of the year.
Most Improved Society - Pool Soc
The Pool Society has offered great events and social activities throughout the year, increasing its membership and helping connect people from different courses in a friendly and relaxed environment.
Outstanding Individual Contribution to a Society - Phoebe Thompson
Phoebe has put in immense effort to make the student experience the best she can. From organising numerous socials, to the incredible attention to detail she has put into the TEDx event, Phoebe has gone above and beyond her role as President.
Academic Society of the Year - MPSA
Medway Pharmacy Students’ Association has been successfully running for over ten years. This year, they organised a whole range of events, branded hoodies, and the MPSA ball, creating a real sense of community within the school and giving the chance to celebrate a successful year.
Society of the Year - Medway Islamic Society
With no handover whatsoever, Medway Islamic Society grew into one of the most successful societies on campus, running socials, organising external speakers, and taking part in national campaigns such as Charity Week and Discover Islam Week.
Outstanding Contribution to Team Medway - Shannon Fisher
Shannon has without a doubt been a key contributor to Team Medway. Every time you look at social media you see Netball’s updates, challenges, or games ensuring members have what they need to take part.
Most Improved Club - Badminton
From no members at the start of the academic year, Badminton has steadily gained members and built a positive atmosphere around sport on campus, organising a BUCS team and some great socials in the sports hall.
Club of the Year - Netball
The Netball Club has always excelled but this year they have done loads of fundraising events and collaborations with other societies. Although they started the year with no sponsor or coach, they ended with amazing sponsors, coach, and a full team of dresses with spares to go into next year.
Team of the Year - Futsal 1st
Last season, Men’s Futsal finished bottom of their League but this year they have pulled together and put in the time and skill to end up one game away from winning the league. Fantastic teamwork!
Captain of the Year - Yurika Yamanda
As Captain of the Volleyball Club, Yurika has worked hard to achieve the success of the Club, making sure new members feel welcomed, putting together volleyball drills for beginners to help improve their skill, and single-handedly leading the women's team to victory!
Lasting Impressions Award - Arun Silva
Arun has positively impacted so many people across the Medway Campus during his time at University. A kind soul, always giving his time to help others, he has been an Academic Rep, Societies Committee Member, UKM Student, and volunteered to help with so many Medway events during his time here.
